Genel anlamda geçmişte bir yetenek veya bir olanak gösterir. îzin ve istek ifade eder. Ortada olmayan birtakım koşullara bağlı yetenek ve kapasite ifade etmek için kullanıldığında COULD, şimdiki, gelecek ve geçmiş zamanlan gösterir. izin ve istek ifade etmek için kullanıldığında gelecek ve şimdiki zamanlan gösterir.
Ancak, COULD yardımcısının özellikle yetenek ve olanak ifade ettiği cümleler dikkatle incelendiğinde şu gerçek ortaya çıkar.
a) Geçmişe ait bir yetenek veya olanaktan söz ediliyorsa
COULD = WAS / WERE ABLE TO
olur.
Example:
He could (-was able to) run very fast when he was young.
(Gençken çok hızlı koşabilirdi.)
b) Bir çaba harcandıktan sonra bir şeyin elde edilebildiğinden veya amaçlanan noktaya ulaşılabildiğinden söz eden cümlelerde
WAS / WERE ABLE TO
kullanılır.
Bu anlamda Manage to(başarmak) fiili ile eşanlamlıdır.
Example:
After a long struggle we were able to climb the mountain.
(Uzun bir çabadan sonra dağa tırmanmayı başardık.)
c) Bir çaba harcandığı halde söz konusu işin başarılamadığını belirtmek için COULDN'T yardımcısı tercih edilir.
Example:
I tried hard but I couldn't-repair that car.
(Çok çaba harcadım, ama şu arabayı onaramadım.)
d) Kaçırılan yada bilinçli olarak kullanılmayan bir olanaktan söz etmek için COULD yardımcısı kullanılır. Cümlenin olumlu yapısına karşın anlam olumsuzdur.
Example:
1 — He could have helped me.
(Bana yardım edebilirdi.) (Ama etmedi.)
2 — I could see him.
(Onu görebilirdim.) (Ama görmedim.)
c) Verilmiş bir izinden söz etmek veya bir izin ve istek belirtmek için de COULD yardımcısı kullanılır.
Example:
1 — I could use his car any time I needed.
(Gereksinim duyduğum her zaman arabasını kullanabilirdim.)
2 — Could I use your pen for a moment, please?
(Kaleminizi bir dakika kullanabilir miyim?)
Ayrıca şu noktayı da belirtmekle yarar olsa gerek: WAS / WERE ABLE TO eşyalarla kullanılmaz.

NOT: Bir çaba harcandıktan sonra olumlu bir sonuca ulaşıldığını belirten cümlelerde COULD yardımcısını kullanmak olanağı yoktur. Fakat olumsuz bir sonuç için durum değişir. Her ne kadar yukardaki örneklerde WASN'T / WEREN'T ABLE TO kullanıldığını görüyorsak da COULDN'T tercih edilir.

E — POLITE REQUEST - PERMISSION) (Kibar istek - izin):
COULD yardımcısını kullanarak kibar izin ve istekte bulunabiliriz. Aynı amaçla kullanılan CAN ve MAY den bir bakıma daha resmî ve daha kibar anlam taşıyan cümleler oluşturabiliriz. Verilmiş bir izinden söz ederken de COULD yardımcısını kullanabiliriz.

(Kitabınızı ödünç alabilir miyim, lütfen?)
2 — Could she come with us, please?
(Bizimle gelebilir mi?)

F — PRESENT OR FUTURE IMPROBABILITY CONTRARY —TO— FACT:

IF cümlelerinin II. tipinde (TYPE II.) kullanılır.
Kaybolmuş bir koşulun gerçekleşmesi halinde, bir işin olmasının mümkün olabileceğini ifade eder.

COULD + HAVE + VERB (past participle)
Conditional Perfect diye bilinen bu yapı herhangi bir nedenle kullanılamayan, geçmişe ait bir yeteneği veya bir olanağı ifade eder. IF cümlelerinin III. tipinde (TYPE III -unreal past) görülür.
Example:
1 — He could have passed the test if he had studied harder.
(Daha çok çalışmış olsaydı, imtihanı vermiş olabilirdi.)
2 — He could have bought that house if you had informed him in time.
(Vaktinde kendisine haber vermiş olsaydınız, o evi satın almış olabilirdi.)
